Import from Trello
This page helps you bring a Trello board into By Dawn. At the end its cards are By Dawn tickets, and, if you chose to keep syncing, the two stay in step until your end date. Import and sync explains the steps every tracker shares, so this page covers only what’s particular to Trello.
Before you start
Section titled “Before you start”- You need to be a project admin in By Dawn, and an org admin has to allow By Dawn’s Power-Up (see Before you start).
- By Dawn works in Trello as the member who allows it, so do that as someone on the board.
Connect
Section titled “Connect”-
Sign in to Trello as the member By Dawn should act as.
-
In By Dawn, open Settings › Import & sync › New import, pick Trello and choose Connect.
-
Trello asks whether to let By Dawn read and write your boards. Choose Allow.
-
Trello sends you back to By Dawn, and the page shows the connected Trello member.
By Dawn uses its own Trello Power-Up, so you don’t create one, and it isn’t added to any board. The access you give doesn’t expire on its own: it lasts until the sync ends, or until you revoke By Dawn under Applications in your Trello account settings.
Pick what to bring
Section titled “Pick what to bring”Pick one board. Its open cards, their comments, checklists and attachments come over.
How Trello maps
Section titled “How Trello maps”Trello has no statuses, only lists, so its lists are matched to columns by name, and you check each one.
- Lists. By Dawn suggests a column from words in the list’s name: Done, Complete or Shipped suggest a completed column, Review or QA a review column, Doing or In progress a building column, Backlog or Icebox the backlog, and anything else a to-do column.
- Finished cards. Trello has no “done” flag on a card, so a card counts as finished when it’s in a list you mapped to a completed column. You have to map at least one list to a completed column before you can import.
- Archived cards aren’t imported.
- Checklists become a task list at the end of the ticket’s description, under a heading with the checklist’s name. Trello keeps owning that part: a sync rewrites it from Trello, and edits to it in By Dawn aren’t sent back.
- Members. Trello never shows members’ emails, so pair each person with a By Dawn member by hand. Anyone you don’t pair stays on the ticket by name, unassigned. The first member on a card becomes its assignee.
- Priorities. Trello has no priority field, so tickets come in with no priority.
- Labels become labels.
When you sync both ways
Section titled “When you sync both ways”By Dawn writes back the title, description (without the checklist part), list, members, labels and due date, plus new comments. New tickets you create in By Dawn are added to the list you mapped their column to.
By Dawn sets up a Trello webhook on each board when a sync starts, so an edit in Trello usually reaches By Dawn within a minute. Its regular check every few minutes catches anything a webhook missed.
Where to go next
Section titled “Where to go next”- Import and sync: conflicts, pausing and ending a sync.
