    Insights

This page helps you find out how work is moving through By Dawn: what shipped, where it waited, and how much of it the agents did on their own. By the end you’ll know how to open Insights, narrow it to the work you care about, and get from any number to the tickets behind it.

Insights is a set of dashboards, one per lens. A lens looks at your work from one angle, such as flow, agents or cost. Each opens with a row of headline numbers and a few charts and tables below them. What each number counts is on Lenses and metrics.

Insights for all projects on the Overview lens: the lens tabs, the filter row set to the last 30 days, and headline numbers such as Shipped, Cycle time and Autonomous ship rateInsights for all projects on the Overview lens: the lens tabs, the filter row set to the last 30 days, and headline numbers such as Shipped, Cycle time and Autonomous ship rate

Choose Insights in the sidebar, or press ⌘7. It opens for the project you’re in. Two other places open it already narrowed:

    • a cycle’s page, whose Insights button opens that cycle
    • an epic’s page, whose Insights button opens that epic’s tickets

The switch at the top moves between This project and All projects, and keeps the lens you’re on. All projects covers every project you can see. A restricted project you aren’t a member of never shows up, not even in a total, and an org admin sees them all.

Everyone in an organization can open Insights. If yours has taken that away, the page says “You don’t have access to Insights”, and an org admin can give it back.

The tabs across the top are the lenses, in this order:

    Lens Answers
Overview How much shipped, how fast, how much of it without help, and what’s running late.
Flow How tickets move through the board’s stages, and how long they take.
Agents How agent runs end, which mission steps get retried and why, and how busy your machines and Claude seats are.
People Where people unblock agents: reviews, decisions and messages.
Cost What the agents’ tokens would cost at API list prices, and where they went.
Questions How people use Questions, and how well it answers.

Overview and Flow are on every plan. Agents, People, Cost and Questions need a plan with analytics dashboards. Without one, their tabs show a lock and the page says “Analytics dashboards are not on your plan”. An org admin can upgrade in Settings, then Organization, then Billing.

The filter row under the tabs applies to every lens, and By Dawn remembers it for the next time you open Insights.

    • Window: Last 7 days, Last 30 days (where it starts) or Last 90 days, one of the project’s six most recent cycles, or Custom dates… up to a year long. Cycles are offered when one project is in view.
    • vs previous period: compares each number with the same length of time just before, and shows the change under it. A cycle is compared with the cycle length before it.
    • Project, in All projects only: some projects instead of all.
    • Agent / model: work done with some runtimes or models, such as Claude Code or one model of it. The list holds only what has actually run.
    • Epic · Cycle · Label: work in an epic, a cycle or with a label. Pick one project first.
    • Member, on People only: one member’s numbers or several.

Reset puts everything back to the last 30 days with nothing filtered.

A chart that shows a count over time has a Show by switch. Auto picks for you: by the day up to 45 days, by the week up to 200 days, and by the month after that. D, W and M choose yourself. Weeks start on Monday, and days are cut in your organization’s time zone.

Click a week or a month to see its days, and ← All weeks goes back. A column cut short by the window, or one that’s still going, is hatched (dashed on a line) and marked Partial, so a half week doesn’t look like a bad week.

Every number leads to the work behind it:

    • Hover over a number’s ⓘ to read what it counts.
    • Click a headline number, a bar or a dot to open the tickets behind it. The list opens on the right with the metric’s name at the top, and chips to narrow it further. Click a ticket to open it.
    • Tickets ↗ on a chart or table does the same for the whole panel. On some panels it’s Runs, Questions, Open tickets or Decisions.

A list shows 50 at a time, and Load more fetches the next 50.

The line under the filters says when the numbers were last updated, such as “Updated 2 min ago”. By Dawn updates them every minute or so, and the open lens reads them again every five minutes and when you come back to the window. The dot next to it turns amber if the numbers are more than 15 minutes old.

Insights only counts from the day By Dawn started collecting each kind of data, and never fills in the time before. So the line also says Data since that day. If your window starts earlier, it turns amber and its tooltip says which data starts late, because the first days of the window are under-counted.

A brand-new organization sees “Insights is still warming up” for its first few minutes, while By Dawn works out its first numbers.

The page’s address holds the lens, the filter row and each chart’s Show by choice. Copy it to send someone exactly what you’re looking at. Opening a link like that replaces the filters you had with the ones in the link.

Everyone sees their own numbers on People. Admins can also see each member’s once an owner or admin turns on Show admins everyone’s numbers on the People card in Settings, then Organization, then Insights. The setting is off to start with. Even then, members are listed by name and never ranked. Seeing other members also needs the “View people insights” permission, which admins have.

Turn on Weekly Insights digest, on the Email card in Settings, then You, then Notifications, for an email every Monday morning with the week before: Overview’s headline numbers and the ten tickets that most need attention, across the projects you can see. A week with nothing in it sends nothing.

Why is a number blank instead of zero?

A blank (—) with “No data yet” means By Dawn has nothing to count yet, which isn’t the same as counting zero. A median or a percentage worked out from fewer than five tickets in a day is left blank for the same reason: it would mislead more than it helps.

Is Est. cost what we pay?

No. It’s what the tokens would cost at API list prices. Claude seats are billed at a flat rate, so it’s never an invoice. See Cost.

Can I see a project I'm not a member of?

Only if it’s open to everyone in the organization. A restricted project counts only for its members and for org admins.

Why does the dot say the numbers are old?

By Dawn updates them about every minute. If the line says more than 15 minutes, updating is behind; your board and tickets aren’t affected. The numbers catch up on their own.
