Organizations

This page explains your By Dawn organization: how to create one, how to move between the ones you belong to, and who can change what. By the end you’ll know which role you need for each part of Settings, then Organization.

An organization is your company’s home in By Dawn. Its people, teams, projects, connected apps and sign-in rules all belong to it, and everyone in it has one role there: owner, admin or member. You can belong to several organizations, with a different role in each, and work in one at a time.

You create one while you sign in, so there’s nothing to set up beforehand.

  1. Sign in to By Dawn. If you don’t belong to an organization yet, By Dawn asks you to Create your workspace. If you do, Choose a workspace lists them, with or create a new one underneath.

  2. Type the Organization name, such as your company’s name, and choose Create & open board.

You’re the new organization’s owner, and you land on its board. By Dawn makes the organization’s URL slug from its name, and you can change both in Settings, then Organization, then General.

To join someone else’s organization instead, use the invitation they sent you (see Members and invites).

Open the account menu and choose Switch organization, then pick the organization. The one you’re in is ticked, and each shows your role there. By Dawn then opens that organization’s projects and settings.

Switch organization only appears when you belong to more than one organization.

Open Settings and choose Organization at the top, beside You and This project. The header names the organization and your role in it, and says “Applies to everyone in” your organization, because these settings do.

Settings, then Organization, then General holds the organization’s Organization name, its URL slug (“URL-safe identifier used in links to this organization”) and its Time zone, which Insights uses for its days, weeks and activity grid. The time zone starts as UTC.

Owners and admins can change these and choose Save. Everyone else sees them read-only, with “Only owners and admins can change these.”

By Dawn tidies a slug as you save it: lower-case letters and digits, with a dash for anything else, so My Org! becomes my-org. Two organizations can’t share a slug. Changing the slug changes your organization’s single sign-on address, if you use one.

Each role can do everything the one below it can.

Role Can
member Work in the organization’s open projects and the restricted ones they’re on, read the organization’s settings and its member list, and use its machines, terminals and Insights
admin Everything a member can, plus manage members, invites and teams, change General and most organization settings, create API keys, and read the sign-in, domain and single sign-on settings
owner Everything an admin can, plus change how people sign in, verify domains, set up single sign-on and SCIM, and make or remove other owners

An organization always keeps at least one owner. Owners and admins also have full access to every project, so they don’t need adding to each one (see Project members and access).

Everyone sees General, Run defaults, Members & invites, Teams, GitHub, Azure DevOps, Board, Pull requests, Branching, Missions, Mission phases and Insights. A member can read them, and the controls they can’t use are switched off.

Owners and admins also see Chat integrations, Security, Domains, Single sign-on, SCIM provisioning and Billing. Admins can read Domains, Single sign-on and SCIM provisioning, but only an owner can change them. These sections need you to be online, because they read and write your organization’s settings directly.

Can I leave an organization, or delete one?

Not from the app yet. To leave, ask an owner or admin to remove you in Settings › Organization › Members & invites. There’s no way to delete an organization in the app.

Why can't I see Security or Billing?

They’re for owners and admins. If you’re one and still can’t see them, check that you’re online and signed in: By Dawn hides them offline rather than show settings it can’t read.

Does changing the organization's name change anything else?

No. The URL slug is separate, so links and your single sign-on address only change if you change the slug.
